Royal Regiment | Itinerary

-  - Apr 29 | Departure Day
Depart from Toronto's Lester B Pearson Airport on your overnight flight to Brussels. [Overnight Flight - Dinner and breakfast will be served onboard]

Day 1 - Apr 30 | Arrival Day
Upon arrival in Brussels, you will be met by your coach driver and tour manager before embarking on our journey to Antwerp (~1h15min, 45km). We will arrive in time for lunch to enjoy a brief orientation tour before taking the rest of the day to rest and relax. Tonight, join us for our group "Welcome Dinner" for the opportunity to meet our fellow travelling companions. [Overnight - Antwerp (D)]

Day 2 - May 01 | Exploring Antwerp
After breakfast, our guide will take us on an exploration of the perfectly preserved medieval port city of Antwerp. Explore narrow cobbled pathways in the crammed and centuries-old Diamond District which houses thousands of diamond traders, cutters, and polishers. Venture around the grand Grote Markt, and take the afternoon to enjoy the city at your own pace. May we suggest a visit to the Rubens House to explore the former mansion home of the Rubens, or perhaps the Brewery Tour at De Koninck Brewery, the only brewery, in the centre of town. Tonight, enjoy dinner on your own, sampling the finest traditional delicacies Belgium can offer. [Overnight - Antwerp (B)]

Day 3 - May 02 | Exploring the Scheldt
After breakfast this morning, we say our farewells to Antwerp and begin our discussions of the Battle of the Scheldt, the longest battle on Dutch territory.  We continue to Bergen-op-Zoom Canadian Military Cemetery,  where over 1,280 casualties lie as a result of Operation Infatuate. We continue to Amersfoort for lunch, before our visit to the Amersfort Camp one of the three best known memorial centres in Holland. Over 35,000 political prisoners were detained in this transit camp, under the direct command of the SS between the years 1941-45. Today, the National Monument Camp stands as a memorial for reflecting on the past, in the hopes we pass on lessons from the past to new generations. After our visit, we head east, to Arnhem to enjoy our dinner and overnight.  [Overnight - Arnhem (B, D)]

Day 4 -  May 03 | Exploring the Liberation Story, Nijmegen

We begin our day with an orientation of Nijmegen (~40min, 24.3km) before heading to the Liberation Museum in Groesbeek for the opportunity to understand occupied Holland and the operations by Allied Forces in 1944/45. After paying our respects at the Canadian Military Cemetery of Groesbeek, we tour back through Arnhem (~40min, 24.3km) to see the John Frost Bridge, (A Bridge Too Far) and the British Airborne Memorial. Our day will finish with a visit to the Hartenstein Hotel, the HQ of the beleaguered Airborne Forces in Operation Market Garden - now a remarkable museum. We return to the hotel in the late afternoon to enjoy dinner on your own.  [Overnight - Arnhem (B)]

Day 5 -  May 04 | **Ceremony Day** Holten Military Cemetery

After breakfast, we depart for the Commemoration Ceremonies at the Commonwealth Military Cemetery of Holten. (~1h 15min, 64km)  Before returning to Arnhem, we will stop at the Twente Kanaal where the RRC forced a crossing at Almen. Here, Jip will tell us about the interesting duel involving a PIAT and a Panzerfaust. Enjoy the rest of the day at your own pace to dine and explore.  [Overnight - Arnhem (B)]

Day 6 - May 05 |  **Ceremony Day** Wageningen, transfer to Groningen

Enjoy a relaxed start before saying your farewells to Arnhem. We travel to Wageningen today (~35min, 18km) for the Wageningen Parade complete with a static show with military trucks, basecamps and reenactments (Start time approx 3.00pm). After the ceremonies are over, we take the drive to Groningen (2h 15min, 187km) where we will check-in to enjoy a set dinner together.  [Overnight - Groningen (B, D)]

Day 7 - May 06 | Leeuwarden & Groningen
After breakfast this morning we will explore Leeuwarden (~1h 15min, 65km) and Groningen - both liberated by the 2nd Division in April of 1945. Both towns will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary Liberation of the Netherlands with local festivities and events. Tonight, enjoy dinner in Groningen at your own pace. [Overnight - Groningen (B)]

Day 8 - May 07 | Giethoorn & Haarlem
We say our farewells to Groningen this morning, and head to Haarlem with a stop en-route in Giethoorn (~1h 30min, 91km), the Venice of the Netherlands, where you will find canals instead of streets. It is one of the most delightful villages in the Netherlands. This afternoon, we continue south to the Dutch Tulip Fields of Keukenhof gardens, (~2h 10min, 149km). This evening, we head to our hotel for our dinner and overnight. [Overnight - Noordwijk/Haarlem area (B, D)]

Day 9 - May 08 | Exploring in Amsterdam

Today, we head to Amsterdam for a full day to explore the city, including a walking tour with your guide, plus the option of either taking a canal cruise, a visit to Anne Frank’s House, a tour of the Heineken Brewery Experience or perhaps even a visit of the Red Light District. After lunch, enjoy the afternoon to explore the city at your own pace.
